profile: Ulrika Lundgren
Stylist-turned-designer Ulrika Lundgren founded her fashion label Rika in 2005, after first having worked as a fashion and interiors stylist for prestigious magazines such as Casa Vogue and ELLE Decoration.
During her years spent globe-trotting, she developed a strong personal taste, always on the hunt for special, truly unique pieces. The Swedish-born designer credits her grandmother, who loved to create things and taught her that the key to beauty is in the details.
After countless compliments and requests from fellow stylists and fashion friends, Lundgren designed 20 handmade bags by a saddelmaker in Spain and just like that, the Rika label was born. The style fuses rock ‘n’ roll and a timeless feminine silhouette –with a sprinkle of pared down, Scandinavian aesthetic.
She chose her favorite symbol, a star, to be her trademark. “A star reminds us of that vintage touch-of-Hollywood class as much as of a contemporary hue of rock ‘n’ roll,” said the designer, which sums up what Rika is about. “I want to make things l like to wear my self of course, that I can wear day and night time” she added.
Today, Rika includes a beautiful selection of handcrafted, chemical-free leather collection of accessory together with a small ready to wear collection of fashionable but season-less wardrobe staples. A feminine pencil skirt in leather paired with an ultra soft baby mohair striped sweater, or a star cashmere cardigan matched with a rock chic leather biker jackets are amongst Ulrika’s favorite items to wear all year round.
Ulrika lives with her family and works in Amsterdam; her studio, boutique and recently opened guesthouse, Maison Rika.
In a style and ambiance in harmony with Rika’s sensitivity, the petite guest house offers two rooms on two floors, with a view on the historical canal and a decoration composed of unique, meticulously chosen objects.
The Rika Magazine is another project dear to the label. Created by Lundgren and New-York based design director Jacob Wildschiodtz, the independent, bi-annual publication acts as a manifesto of Rika’s philosophy: each issue features women in the arts, whose personality and vision are inspiring to readers worldwide.
